Hi everybody, I hope that you are having a good day and that you and your loved ones are safe, healthy, and busy. I have known many teachers to commonly say “less screen time and more green time”. While Melbourne students are currently not able to spend as much time outside as we may like it is still as important for students to be moving. Therefore, I wanted to share two mathematics games with you that can help bring some movement into your children at home mathematics education (see resource no.1).
The first game is called \u2018Simon says Geography\u2019. It is a version of ‘Simon Says’, in which, children make angles and\/or shapes with their arms and hands. This activity is most successful when played in groups and should be undertaken in a clear inside or outside space where your children can stretch safely without the risk of hurting themselves or damaging home property.
The second game is called bouncing equations. It involves getting an inflatable beach ball. You then write equations on the ball and bounce it on the ground. Your child catches the ball then they have to answer one of the questions that they touch. They then bounce it back to you. This game is only suited to a backyard or a similar open space.
A final note, calculations and geometry are recurring topics across different levels in the mathematical so you can make the questions in these games simpler or more complicated depending on your child’s point of need. For example, in the ‘bouncing equations game’ if your child is in year 1 it may be appropriate to focus on addition equations, if however, they are in grade 6 it may be appropriate to focus on BODMAS.
